‘IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOSEPH (JERRY) THE BELOVED SON OF ESTHER AND ABRAHAM RAFER WHO WAS KILLED BY ENEMY ACTION 8TH MARCH 1941. AGED 30’

Joseph known as Jerry was born in 1911 to Abraham and Esther nee Amdur. Jerry had an older brother David and two younger sisters Minnie and Sheila.

On 8 March 1941 Jerry was on leave and went with other airmen to the Café de Paris club in the West End of London. The club was thought to be safe as it was twenty feet underground. Two bombs hit the building, travelled down a ventilation shaft and exploded in front of the band. Joseph was amongst 34 people who were killed including Max Radstone who is also commemorated on the website.
