Julius was born in 1921 in Mile End, London to Polish born parents Morris and Fanny nee Gelefunt and had two older siblings, Esther and Henry. In 1939 the family were living at 48 Cleveland Way, Stepney and their father worked as ladies tailor presser. At the time of Julius’s death his father had moved to Leeds.

Julius was an air gunner in Halifax JD122 which departed from RAF Linton-on-Ouse on a night operation to Dortmund. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter pilot Hauptmann Wolfgang Thimmig and crashed at Zuna, 7 km southwest of Wierden, Overijssel, Netherlands.
