Arthur (Abraham) was born on 26 February 1922 in Pancras, London to Marks and Millie née Tolzinsky/Abrams and he had three brothers, Isadore, Isaac and Reuben and a sister Sadie. Their father, who originated from Lithuania, worked as a furrier and died in 1942. In 1939, when Arthur was seventeen, he was living with his parents at 51 Shepherds Bush Green in Hammersmith, London and he was working as a furrier. Arthur enlisted into the RAF in 1940.

Arthur was the navigator on Lancaster LM260 which departed RAF East Kirkby on a night operation to Würzburg. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Moos, 11km south of Würzburg killing all the crew.
