Samuel was born on 5 August 1914 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Joseph and Elizabeth Hamburger. Samuel’s grandparents Samuel and Sientye originated from the Netherlands and lived in Stoke Newington where Samuel worked as a butcher.

Samuel’s father Joseph worked for the Singer Machine Company in Buenos Aires. The family returned to England where Joseph volunteered to the 32nd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in France on 18 October 1916 when Samuel was two years old.

Samuel was the pilot of Wellington Z9100 which departed RAF Mount Farm for daylight training. The aircraft lost height due to engine failure & flew into a haystack before crashing at Barracks Farm, Little Stoke, Wallingford.
