Louis was born on 24 November 1906 in Cheetham, Greater Manchester to Ukraine born Hyman Darmstadter and Austrian born Sarah nee Nussbaum and had nine siblings. The family surname was originally Darmstadter and Louis’s siblings changed their surnames to Demsteader or Dempster. Their father worked as a presser in ladies’ tailoring.

When Louis was twenty four he had twins with Lilian Derbyshire, Marjorie and Derek, born 16 February 1931. Records show that they married a year after their twins were born. Their final child Harold was born in 1935. The family were living at 13 Hibbert Crescent in Failsworth, Manchester in 1939 and Louis worked as a raincoat presser.

Louis died at Hibbert Crescent on 10 November 1946 and his death certificate states; ‘1(a) Haemoptysis (b) Pulmonary Tuberculosis.’
