Alfred was born on 29 July 1917 in Holborn, London to Polish born parents Solomon and Annie nee Gluckstein and he had two brothers and a sister. Their father worked as a meat carver and was a volunteer A.R.P. warden. After leaving school, Alfred worked as a gentlemen’s hairdresser and then enlisted early in the war into the Pioneer Corps.

In 1939, the family were living at 96 Frampton Park Road and on the night of 16 October 1941, during the Blitz, a bomb hit the family home killing Alfred’s mother Annie and his sister-in-law Jane. Alfred was also killed the same night when a bomb hit Watt’s Garage on Paragon Road in Hackney.
