Robert was born in 1925 in Glasgow to Russian born Abraham and Latvian Rebecca nee Hodes and had seven brothers and sisters. Their father worked as a mantle machinist. Robert enlisted in Edinburgh in 1943.

Robert was killed in aircraft Avro Lincoln RF385 during a violent thunderstorm. The crew lost control and the aircraft crashed at Queenborough near Leicester on 20 February 1946.

All the crew were killed.
