Robert was born on 1 December 1922 to Jack and Sarah née Silver. Robert was named Isaac Solomons when he was born and had three younger brothers, Leonard, Ralph and Alan. Ralph left the photo of Robert at his grave in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in 2014.
Robert’s father was born Moses Solomons in the east end of London. He adopted the name of Jack Hart when he began to box as a middleweight. Jack became one of Britain’s best known boxing referees and refereed his last fight at the Royal Albert Hall.
