Nathan was born in April 1920 in Whitechapel, London to Romania born George (Gamnis) and Belgium born mother Fanny nee Laufer and he had two older brothers Abraham and Isaac. In 1921 their father George was listed as an out of work waiter and by 1939 he was listed as a cafe manager. Nathan worked as a ladies presser tailor in Stepney, London.

Nathan enlisted into the Queen’s Royal Regiment in October 1940. In April 1941 he was on duty at an Army post to the east of Dover in Kent. He was resting with his good friend Arthur Budworth on a bank when they got up to go on duty at 6pm. As Arthur stood up he loaded his gun and then accidentally pressed the trigger and shot Nathan. Nathan was killed instantly after the bullet entered his head.
