Hyman was born on 28 July 1901 in Leeds, Yorkshire to Russian parents Wolf and Betsy nee Taylor and he had two sisters Annie and Jenny. Their father worked as a slipper maker and died young in 1915. At the age of twenty, Hyman worked as a baker and in later years he was a fairground stall proprietor and auctioneer. He married Edith Thomson in Oct 1940 in Leeds and their daughter Irene was born in 1941.

Hyman died at the Park Fever hospital, Lewisham in Kent from Cerebrospinal Fever (Meningococcal Meningitis)
