Joseph was born in 1924 in Stockport, Manchester to Hyman and Hettie née Kaufman. Joseph had four siblings, Dora, Solomon who died aged twenty nine in 1941, Beatrice, Sylvia and Sydney.

In 1939, the family were living at 43 Lea Road, Stockport and Joseph’s father Hyman was a fur commission agent and his mother Hettie worked as a master gown and mantle dealer.

Researcher Dorothy Ramser has written in detail about the crash between Lancaster ND 576 of 44 Sqn & Lancaster ME 573 of 463 Sqn.
