Rudi was born on 15 August 1908 in Munich, Germany to Max, a successful Jewish lawyer and Bella nee Forcheimer. Rudi had an older sister Lore, an older brother Otto who died from meningitis aged six a few months after Rudi’s birth and a younger brother Gerhart. Rudi studied Law and Economics and graduated with a PhD in Economics. In 1934 he travelled to Holland where he trained as a carpenter before travelling to England. He enlisted into the Pioneer Corps in 1940.
