Bob was born on 5 November 1922 in King’s Norton, Worcestershire to London born parents Joel Woolf known as Jack and Phoebe nee Leek and he had a sister Doreen and a brother Denis. Jack was a director of a furniture company and he served in WW1 in the 16th County of London Regiment.

In 1939, the family lived at 11 Hermitage Road, Birmingham. The family were all involved in the war effort, with Jack an A.R.P. Warden, Phoebe was a volunteer with the ambulance service and Doreen was an A.R.P. telephonist.

Bob was based at Netheravon, Wiltshire where he was training with 1 HGSU. He was on board Horsa I LH277 on a night exercise when the tug crashed at high speed into a haystack near to Adlestrop, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.
