Alfred was born on 21 August 1890 in London to German born parents, who were naturalised British citizens, Siegfried and Lucie nee Hirsch. Siegfried was an importer of fancy goods He attended Charterhouse school from 1904 to 1906 and after school he worked as a merchant. He served in WW1 enlisting on 19 February 1915 and was eventually promoted to a Captain in the Royal Army Service Corps. After the war he married Elsie Baer in 1918 and they had three children Joyce, John and Susan.

At the outbreak of WW2 he joined the Intelligence Corps and the 1939 Register states that he was a Captain based at No 15 Internment Camp. His wife Elsie was listed as a volunteer telephone operator at Marylebone Town Hall.

The family were living at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, Westminster in 1942 when Alfred died aged fifty-one of heart failure.
