Gerald (Gerry) was born on 7 March 1918 in Leeds, Yorkshire to Russian born Israel and Edith née Hyman and had one brother Maurice. Gerry and his father both worked as tailors and Maurice was a medical student. Their mother Edith died in March 1942 three months before Gerry’s death.

Gerry was the observer in Wellington X3309 which departed from RAF Snaith on a night operation to Bremen. The aircraft was lost without trace. The other four crew who died were:
