Gerald was born on 3 August 1909 at 29 Christian Street, St George in the East, London to Polish born parents Harris and Fanny nee Schecker and he had an older sister Lena. Harris worked as a journeyman baker and he died shortly after Gerald’s birth. Fanny remarried to Jacob Desser, a second hand clothes dealer, but he died in 1922 when Gerald was thirteen. In October 1930, Gerald married Kate Rappoport and their son Maurice was born on 16 July 1932 in Stepney, London. Maurice’s birth certificate states that his father was working as a fancy goods salesman.
In 1939, the family lived at 11 Eagle Mansions in Stepney, London where Gerald was listed as working as a motor lorry driver.
Gerald died on 8 March 1944 at St Charles Hospital, London and his death certificate lists his cause of death as: Cardiac failure due to fibrosis of the heart of rheumatic origin.
