Basil was born in 1914 in Kadoma, Zimbabwe to Maurice and Jennie née Miller. He married Sadie Chimowitz in Kadoma in 1934 and their daughter Jeanette was born in 1938, followed by Alwyn in 1940. After Basil’s death Sadie did not remarry and died at the age of eighty two in Zimbabwe.

Basil was an air bomber in Stirling EF407 which departed RAF Chedburgh on a night operation to Hamburg. The aircraft was believed to have been shot down by night-fighter and crashed into the North Sea.
