Denis was born in 1924 in Prestwich, Lancashire to Abraham and Rachel nee Burman and had an older sister Constance. He attended Manchester University before he enlisted at Padgate when he was eighteen in 1942.
Denis was the pilot of Anson SAAF 3180 which crashed whilst attempting a forced landing on a beach at Mazeppa Bay in the Eastern Cape following an engine failure.
