Wilfred was the son of Austria born Nathan (Naftali Schnur) and Alice née Willmit of Ipswich, Suffolk.

Wilfred was born Woolf Schnur and attended Ipswich School. His sisters were Doreen who married Samuel Barton and Mavis who married Anthony Sotnick, both of whom emigrated to the USA.

Wilfred’s father Nathan was born in Austria and was bought up in Stepney. He sang in synagogue choirs and the Royal Opera House, became a tailor and a professional boxing promoter, and owned champion racing greyhounds. He was founder-director of Ipswich Town Football Club in 1936 and later persuaded Alf Ramsey to become the club manager.

Wilfred was the wireless operator on Stirling R9279 which departed RAF Bourn on a night operation to Cologne. The aircraft was lost without trace and all the crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
