Philip was born on 19 July 1920 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Lithuania born parents Barnett and Sylvia nee Finklestone and he had eight siblings.

Philip is buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar with a Cross on his headstone. Evidence was submitted to the CWGC that he was Jewish and his headstone will be changed adding a Star of David.
