Ralph was born on 5 June 1913 in Salford, Manchester to Solomon and Hannah née Lesser and he was the youngest of six children. Their father was a cloth cap manufacturer in Salford.

Ralph was the Vice President and previously the treasurer of the Waterpark Jewish club in Manchester. He married Iris Balon in 1938 and volunteered for the RAF two years later in 1940. Iris was a volunteer in the WAAF and as the Last Post sounded at Ralph’s graveside she stood and saluted wearing her WAAF uniform.

Ralph was the navigator of Wellington R3232 which departed from RAF Lossiemouth on a training navigation exercise. The aircraft crashed near Auchtermuchty and it is thought that engine failure was the cause of the accident. All the crew were killed.
