Alfred was the son of Charles and Leah née Rodinsky of Finsbury Park, London and he was the middle child of seven siblings. Charles worked as a cabinet maker and in 1939 the family lived at 67 Queens Drive in Stoke Newington.

Alfred was the flight engineer on Lancaster HK612 which departed from RAF Mildenhall on a daylight operation to attack the Homberg- Meerbeck oil plant. At 14.17 the aircraft was seen to collide at 20,000 feet with another 15 Sqn Lancaster PB115. Both aircraft crashed near Erp, SSW of Uden, Holland killing all the crew.
