Samual was born 1914 in Mile End Old Town, London to Polish father Litman and Ukrainian mother Rachel Bord.

Sam was the Scout master of the Cardiff Jewish Boy Scouts and Doris Volpert was the Captain at the Cardiff Jewish Girl Guides. They announced their engagement during a Girl Guide rally and presentation in 1936 and married later the same year. In 1939 they lived with Doris’s family at 203 Bute Street, Cardiff where Doris’s father Marks Volpert ran a shop. Sam worked as an insurance agent and is listed as RAF Auxiliary 614 Sqn and Doris is listed as a WAAF and assistant section leader. The rest of their story can be found on the link below.

Sam was the wireless operator on Wellington R1033 which departed from Egypt at 20.30 on an operation to bomb Derna Aerodrome in Libya. The aircraft failed to return and all the crew are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial. Sam’s daughter was born one month after his death.
