Joseph (Jossie) was born in 1918 in Bloemfonte, South Africa to Max who was born in Belarus and Minnie who was born in Lithuania. Jossie had six siblings who all lived and died in South Africa.

Jossie was the pilot of Hampden AD831 which departed RAF Upper Heyford on a training exercise. The aircraft was destroyed when it crashed at Baynards Green, Bicester, Oxfordshire, near the airfield.

All four crew were killed.
