Stanley was born in January 1923 in Hackney, London to Russian born Eleazer and Leah nee Alter and had three older sisters. Eleazer worked as a french polisher and the family lived in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, London.

Stanley was training in Canada at 31 SFTS. He was onboard Anson RCAF 12043 which failed to return from a night navigation exercise. All crew are commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial.
