Herbert was born on 12 August 1911 in Charlottenburg, Germany to Berthold Friedmann and Therese nee Joseph. Therese died when Herbert was six years old and he was bought up by two of his mothers sisters.

Herbert met Anna Amelia Hannes who was born in Breslau, Germany and had fled to Amsterdam. They married on 12 August 1936 in Amsterdam and then moved to London in 1939 with their daughter Eve. The 1939 Register states that they lived at 26 Vivian Way, Finchley and Herbert worked as a director of a sausage casing business. Both Herbert and Anna were exempt from internment as enemy aliens. Their son David was born in Hendon, London the following year.

Herbert joined the Pioneer Corps and tragically died on 18 March 1944 in a train accident in Taunton, Somerset.
