Hyman was born on 30 September 1912 in Leeds, Yorkshire to Poland born parents Joseph and Dora nee Claudofski and he had three sisters Lily, Goldie and Gertie. Joseph worked as a leather merchant and he died in 1935.

In 1939, Hyman lived with his widowed mother and sister Goldie at 182 North Street, Leeds and he worked as a boot and shoe dealer.

Hyman was killed in action in Italy.
