Gerald was born on 12 November 1925 in Hammersmith, London to Russian born father Isidore and Clara nee Rabinowitz and he had a brother and a sister. The family lived in Ladbrooke Grove, Kensington and their father was a dentist who became a British citizen in 1938. Gerald worked as a telephone operator at Heston Aerodrome before he enlisted in 1940.

Gerald drowned on SS Anselm when it was torpedoed north of the Azores on 5 July 1941. He was travelling to join the North Africa Campaign. Three other Jews drowned on the ship and are commemorated on this website, Nathan Daren, Maurice Joseph and Jack Segar.
