Cyril was born on 10 May 1920 in Greater Manchester to Lithuania born parents David and Leah nee Bloom and he was the youngest of three boys. In 1939, Cyril lived with his parents and worked as a shop assistant.

At the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers, and volunteered for airborne forces. Cyril completed his glider pilot training and was posted to D Squadron, Flight 5 and took part in Operation Market Garden and was on the 2nd lift from Blakehill Farm.
