Jack was born in 1917 in Edmonton, Middlesex to Dutch born parents Ernest (Emmanuel) and Selene née Nabarro and had three older sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy and Marjorie. Their parents Ernest and Selene were born in Amsterdam and married in Hackney in 1910. Ernest died in Crouch End in 1930.
