Jack was born on 10 September 1903 in Aldgate, London to Russian born parents Mark, a lace warehouseman, and Miriam nee Feldman who became naturalised British citizens in 1911. Jack worked as a manufacturers assistant at his father’s company in 1921. In 1939, he was listed as working as a commercial representative for the Trade Union Congress. The whole family were involved in war work, Jack’s three brothers, Vivian, Sidney and Harold all served in the Army. His sister Gertrude was an APR Warden and his widowed mother Miriam was a volunteer auxiliary at Wembley hospital.
