Ernest was born as Isaac Pechansky in 1918 in Leeds, Yorkshire to Ukrainian parents Louis (Lewis), a master tailor, and Mary nee Elgott. The family moved to England after the birth of the oldest son Kalman in 1913 and Louis served in the Royal Fusiliers in WW1 after which the family changed their surname to Perry.
Ernest married Netta Maxim in Leeds in 1941 and then enlisted as a gunner in the Royal Artillery.
