Alfred was born on 23 October 1896 in Odessa, Ukraine. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli in WW1 and was mentioned in despatches. He was a member of Cricklewood Synagogue and was a keen sportsman and football player. He played football for the Jews Free School, the Mile End Old Boy’s Club and for his Army battalion.

He married Jenny Herman in 1922 and they had a daughter Greta.

Alfred was killed on 9 March 1941 during a bombing raid on Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth.
