Charles was born on 16 February 1922 in Bethnal Green, London to Samuel and Sarah nee Van Boolen and he had two younger siblings, Rachel and Malcolm. The family lived in Islington and Samuel worked as a carpenter’s labourer in 1939.

Charles was on board Wellington JA200 which departed at 23.40 for a reconnaissance flight over the central Aegean and to target Melos. The aircraft was last heard from at 05.00 asking for Q.D.M. The aircraft failed to return. All the crew are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.
