David was born in 1922 in Holborn, London to Israel and Elsie née Hoskin of Essex and had two younger siblings Reuben and Daphne. David’s grandparents, Davis and Milly were born in Germany and moved to England about 1880. In 1939, David and his family were living at 140 Bentry Road, Dagenham. David’s father Israel worked as a porter in a fruit market.

Whitley Z9438 which departed RAF St Eval on a daylight anti-submarine patrol. The aircraft was shot down over the Bay of Biscay after dropping four depth charges, none of which caused any damage. The crew of six were all killed.
