Siegfried Kugelmann was born on 15 June 1902 in Hamburg, Germany to Yaakov (Jacob) and Sophie nee Polak and he had a younger brother Kurt. Siegfried married Bella Rosenthal in Germany and their daughter Susanne (Shoshana) was born in 1934. His father Jacob died in 1935 and the following year his brother Kurt moved to the USA and Siegfried, his wife, daughter and mother moved to England. Siegfried worked as a journalist for the Financial Times newspaper. His son Jack was born in 1939 in Watford, Hertfordshire.

On 6 March 1940, he enlisted into the Pioneer Corps and was posted to No.3 Company. He was then posted on 10 May 1940 to 93 Company, followed by 30 Salvage Unit on 4 December 1941 and 102 Reinforcement Group in 1943. He took part in the invasion of Europe and participated in the withdrawal from Dunkirk. He was killed in action on 25 October 1944.
