Alfred was born on 18 December 1889 in Riga, Latvia and little is known about his family. Alfred served in WW1 and was issued the Mercantile Marine ribbon and British Medal ribbon in 1919 and the Mercantile Marine medal in 1921. His records state that he lived in a boarding house at the docks in Hull at 48 Lister Street, and he became a Naturalised British citizen in 1933.

Alfred was a ship’s carpenter on S.S. Ardanbhan which was torpedoed and damaged by the German submarine U-38 while in Convoy OB-263. Thirteen hours later, she was finally sunk by the Italian submarine Enrico Tazzoli, 235 miles NW of Rockall. There were no survivors. Read more at wreck site: https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?58888
