Ben was born on 7 June 1922 in Chemnitz, Germany to Leon and Claire née Cohnen. Ben had three older brothers Ernst, Fritz and Rolf. In 1933, Ben, his brother Rolf and their parents travelled to England and his two older brothers arrived in 1938 after Kristallnacht.

Ben was the co pilot on Wellington W5361 which departed RAF Binbrook on a night operation to Koln. The aircraft was hit by flak and crashed at crashed at Akerdijk Badhoevedorp, Netherlands.
