Heinz was born on 23 April 1919 in Konigsberg, Germany to Adolf and Frieda Erna nee Heimann and he had a younger brother Gerhard and a sister Ursula. Heinz was listed on on the male enemy alien list in 1939 and was exempt from internment. His record states that he worked as an electrician before becoming a refugee and was working as an agricultural trainee at Tythrop House, Kingsey in Buckinghamshire.

Heinz enlisted into the Pioneer Corps and was one of a group of servicemen training at Pembroke Dock in Wales. They were undergoing a lecture and instruction of the disposal of land mines when there two explosions. Eighteen men were killed instantly and another died the following day.
