Wilfred was the son of Austria born Nathan (Naftali Schnur) and Alice n\u00e9e Willmit of Ipswich, Suffolk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilfred was born Woolf Schnur and attended Ipswich School. His sisters were Doreen who married Samuel Barton and Mavis who married Anthony Sotnick, both of whom emigrated to the USA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilfred’s father Nathan was born in Austria and was bought up in Stepney. He sang in synagogue choirs and the Royal Opera House, became a tailor and a professional boxing promoter, and owned champion racing greyhounds. He was founder-director of Ipswich Town Football Club in 1936 and later persuaded Alf Ramsey to become the club manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilfred was the wireless operator on Stirling R9279 which departed RAF Bourn on a night operation to Cologne. The aircraft was lost without trace and all the crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
