Selwyn was born in October 1922 in Hackney, London to Henry and Polish born Fanny nee Libeskind and he had an older brother Leonard. Further details on the family are unknown to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Selwyn enlisted at the end of 1941. He was assigned to 95 Squadron who were based at Bathurst\u00a0(Banjul)\u00a0in The Gambia,\u00a0about\u00a0700 miles\u00a0south of Port \u00c9tienne (Nouadhibou) in Mauritania.\u00a0The squadron had set up an\u00a0operation\u00a0base at Port \u00c9tienne working in co-operation with the French to\u00a0launch attacks on U-Boats and\u00a0to\u00a0escort troopships and convoys in the Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Selwyn was a controller who was acting as a wireless operator\/air gunner on Sunderland\u00a0DW105.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortly after\u00a0take-off\u00a0at 11.05 hours the aircraft was seen returning to base with smoke emitting from it and\u00a0losing\u00a0height. The starboard inner engine had developed a fault\u00a0and caught fire filling the cabin with smoke and fumes making it impossible for the pilot to see.\u00a0The aircraft failed to make a landing,\u00a0exploding,\u00a0and crashing into the water\u00a0just south of\u00a0Cansado\u00a0Point at 11.15 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
